Interprocess data transfer in ATLAS, a platform for distributed applications

    Get PDF
The ATLAS platform strives to make several useful but technically involved mechanisms available to the programmer building applications over it with the least possible effort. These mechanisms include network distribution of cooperating processes, a powerful macro language, a journaling system and fault tolerance in the presence of network failures or node crashes. In this paper we discuss the techniques used in ATLAS to implement data transfer over a network between different machines with the least hassle to the programmer.Postprint (published version

How much should we pay for interconnecting electricity markets? A real options approach

    Get PDF
An interconnector is an asset that gives the owner the option to transmit electricity between two locations. In financial terms, the value of an interconnector is the same as a strip of real options written on the spread between power prices in two markets. We model the spread based on a: seasonal trend, mean-reverting Gaussian process, and mean-reverting jump process. We express the value of these real options in closed-form. We apply our valuation tool to five pairs of European neighboring markets to value a hypothetical one-year lease of the interconnector. We show valuations for different assumptions about the seasonal component of the spread, and different liquidity caps which proxy for the depth of the interconnected power markets. We derive no-arbitrage lower bounds for the value of the interconnector in terms of electricity futures contracts. We find that, depending on the depth of the market, the jumps in the spread can account for between 1% and 40% of the total value of the interconnector. The two markets where an interconnector would be most (resp. least) valuable are Germany and the Netherlands (resp. France and Germany).Real options, Bull Call Spread, Interconnector, Electricity prices, Jumps, Jump filter

Vector bundles of non-negative curvature over cohomogeneity one manifolds

We provide several results on the existence of metrics of non-negative sectional curvature on vector bundles over certain cohomogeneity one manifolds and homogeneous spaces up to suitable stabilization. Beside explicit constructions of the metrics, this is achieved by identifying equivariant structures upon these vector bundles via a comparison of their equivariant and non-equivariant K-theory. For this, in particular, we transcribe equivariant K-theory to equivariant rational cohomology and investigate surjectivity properties of induced maps in the Borel fibration via rational homotopy theory.Comment: some upgrades and modification

Automatic code generation for ATLAS communications drivers

    Get PDF
ATLAS is a software development platform created in our Department. Among other benefits, it provides support to easily distribute applications over a network. In these applications, communications issues among the different processes should be faced. Pursuing to isolate application developers from the intricacies of these issues, communication drivers are automatically generated from an interface declaration of each process. This automatic code generation --not unlike the generation of stubs in CORBA from the IDL specification-- is the main topic of this report.Postprint (published version
